A weekend of winter fun has just kicked off in Minneapolis.

The City of Lakes Loppet Ski Festival begins Friday with the "Finn Sisu Sprints," which take place in the Calhoun Commons in Uptown.

The two minute heats run through 8:30 p.m. and the Surly Beer Garden will be open until 9 p.m.

The competitions will also take place on Saturday and Sunday.

Due to the Loppet, the following streets will be closed from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. this weekend:

  • Theodore Wirth Parkway from Golden Valley Road to Olson Highway
  • Theodore Wirth Parkway from Glenwood Ave. to the north frontage road of I-394
  • Glenwood Avenue from Xerxes Avenue North to Theodore Wirth Parkway
  • West Calhoun Parkway from Lake Street to Xerxes Avenue South.

The Loppet Foundation provides opportunities for year-round outdoor activities and adventures in the Minneapolis area, focusing on inner-city youth.
