With the deep freeze and dangerously cold wind chills, many Minnesota schools are closed Monday.

Minneapolis Public Schools, St. Paul Public Schools and the Anoka Hennepin School District are among the larger metro districts that canceled classes.

Austin, Rochester and Winona school districts are among those closed in southern Minnesota.

The University of Minnesota, and Augsburg College are among the universities that canceled classes.

For some districts, this is the fourth time this month school has been called off because of the weather.

With winds of 10-20 mph today and temperatures only recovering to near –10, wind chills will remain colder than –25 all day, and at times as low as –35, according to Morning Chief Meteorologist Ken Barlow.

An even colder night is ahead with lows dipping back into the negative 20s for the first time since the beginning of the month. Again, Barlow says it doesn’t take much of a breeze to drop those wind chills right back down into the dangerous zone. Chills tonight will dip to –35 at times and possibly –40 in a few spots outside of the metro.

Gov. Mark Dayton canceled schools statewide on Jan. 6 due to the bone-chilling cold. Last Thursday, many schools were either canceled or late due to the frigid temperatures.

Some districts will have to makeup for the days off.
