Jim Lawrence has a big commitment every day at 10:30 a.m.
About 2,000 Trumpeter Swans flock to Swan Park each mid-morning and wait for Jim Lawrence to make the trek down to the Mississippi River waterfront in Monticello with food to keep them healthy throughout the winter months.
Jim and his late-wife Sheila have been feeding the swans for more than 25 years according to a city website. Since she died in 2011, Jim has carried on the tradition and continued sharing a love for the birds with visitors.
The flock of birds Jim tends to typically increases to about 3,000 until warm weather sends the swans back to thawing Minnesota lakes.
Jim, Sheila, and other donors have provided much of the financial support for the buckets of corn that Jim delivers to the swans. Visitors and swan-lovers can donate to the Swan City Heritage Foundation C/O Monticello Chamber or online.
