Federal wildlife officials and a conservation group will sponsor a free ice fishing day for kids on the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge next month.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Friends of the Refuge Headwaters will hold the outing on Feb. 1 at a boat landing in Winona.
The event is open to children between the ages of six and 13. They'll be paired with experienced ice anglers and bait, tackle and fishing rods will be supplied. Anglers should bring their own ice fishing gear if they have any, however, as well as a folding chair. Hot chocolate and cookies will be provided in a heated tent.
Participants can register on the refuge's website.
