A blast of bitter cold will keep Minnesotans chilled going into the new year.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for central and northeastern Minnesota through Tuesday afternoon. Wind chill advisories are out for the rest of the state except for the southwest.

Embarrass in northeastern Minnesota bottomed out at 40 below zero at 6 a.m. Monday. International Falls fell to 37 below.

Temperatures overnight Monday were expected to be 12 below in the Twin Cities to 20 below just north of the metro and around 30 below near Bemidji, according to KSTP.com meteorologist Sam Ryan. He says the frigid temperatures will stick around until Friday.

Drivers battled slow-moving traffic Monday evening due to light snow and icy roadways. Between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. troopers had responded to 313 crashes and 109 vehicles off of roads or spun out statewide, according to the Minnesota State Patrol. One of the crashes involved a serious injury, but none were fatal.

The temperatures Sunday and Monday were quite a change after we saw temperatures near 50 degrees on Saturday afternoon.

Daily habits could contribute to your risk of frostbite, according to the Centers for Disease Control. If you have diabetes, smoke, or are drinking, that can increase your chances of developing frostbite in these temperatures.

The first sign of frostbite is redness or pain in any skin area. The Mayo Clinic is warning people to immediately get inside and watch for other warning signs like a white or grayish-yellow skin color, skin that feels unusually firm or waxy and numbness.

Having frostbite once can increase your chances of getting it again, and infants and toddlers are at a higher risk because they have a harder time producing enough body heat.
