Maddy Dean is a 5'9" forward-guard, though we could just as well say that her position on Jordan’s basketball team is “scorer,” not that Maddy doesn’t do other things to help Jordan win. We don’t have her numbers for this year, but last year she recorded an average of 11 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals.
But the winner is still the team with the most points, and Maddy has raised her game in that respect from 21 points per game a year ago to 27 so far this year. She scored 68 points last week in Jordan’s wins over Tri-City United and Mayer Lutheran.
“I have been scoring in a few different ways,” Maddy told us. “If I don't get all the way to the rim, I've scored off of pull up jumpers. I have had points in the post, and 3 pointers from coming off of great screens set by my teammates,” she said.
Dean will be playing D-I basketball at Drake next year.
Meanwhile, Andover has been under appreciated in the rock-hard Northwest Suburban Conference. The Huskies were 8-12, good for eighth place, a year ago and, frankly, about the same result was expected this year. Instead, Andover has surprised Forest Lake, Elk River and then #6-rated Anoka in running its record to 5-1.
Senior guard Haydn Becker was Andover’s top returning scorer at 11 ppg. She has boosted that to 16 ppg so far this fall, and scored 43 in two games last week.
Becker told us that Becker’s seniors and Anoka’s seniors “know each other very well. Most of us have at some point played together on our traveling teams.” In order to counteract the Tornadoes size (five 6-footers), Andover, Becker says, is “playing a team game offensively and defensively, because we know that if we don't play together we will struggle against taller teams.”
Becker remains one of Minnesota’s top players who has not yet committed to a college program.
