Minneapolis City Council Votes to Lower Property Taxes for First Time in 30 Years

For the first time in three decades the Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously to lower property taxes by one percent. Next year, 67 percent of Minneapolis taxpayers will see a decrease in property taxes.

The $1.1 billion budget passed Wednesday also tackled a retirement problem for the police and fire departments by hiring and training new members.

It also sets aside $4 million for preliminary engineering for the modern streetcar project.
Minneapolis police are also a step closer to wearing body cameras. Next year’s budget set aside $400,000 for the new equipment.

Mayor-elect Betsy Hodges pushed for the cameras as a way to monitor police officers and cut down on frivolous lawsuits.
