For the first time in three decades the Minneapolis City Council voted unanimously to lower property taxes by one percent. Next year, 67 percent of Minneapolis taxpayers will see a decrease in property taxes.

The $1.1 billion budget passed Wednesday also tackled a retirement problem for the police and fire departments by hiring and training new members.

It also sets aside $4 million for preliminary engineering for the modern streetcar project.
Minneapolis police are also a step closer to wearing body cameras. Next year’s budget set aside $400,000 for the new equipment.

Mayor-elect Betsy Hodges pushed for the cameras as a way to monitor police officers and cut down on frivolous lawsuits.
