Matt Cassel will be the starting quarterback when the Minnesota Vikings face the Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday at the Metrodome, Coach Leslie Frazier announced Wednesday.

Christian Ponder has been recovering from a concussion after being hit in the head during the Dec. 1 win against the Chicago Bears. He has been medically cleared and will be the No. 2 quarterback.

Josh Freeman has started one game and is now relegated to third-string status yet again.

The Baltimore Ravens beat the Vikings 29-26 last Sunday in Baltimore. Minnesota (3-9-1) lost running back Adrian Peterson in the second quarter with an ankle injury, then dropped a game it appeared to have won. Twice. The team was also officially eliminated from playoff contention.

Peterson, the NFL's leading rusher and 2012 MVP, hurt his right foot in the second quarter after catching a short pass and being tackled near the sideline by linebacker Arthur Brown.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
