What do kitty litter, dish-washing detergent, rubbing alcohol and vinegar all have in common?

According to KSTP viewers and Facebook fans, they all help melt icy sidewalks. We tested some of the home remedies and some of them actually work. The remedies all involve products you probably already have around the house.

One viewer suggested a combination of vinegar and water to removed stubborn ice. We tried it, but found that the water simply refroze, creating more ice.

Another Facebook fan says kitty litter is her secret weapon. But, it failed during our field test. We thought it was messy, and didn't melt the ice. However, it is a quick, easy way to create some traction.

Finally, another Facebook fan suggested mixing a tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, "Dawn" dishwashing detergent and a half gallon of warm water. It worked! It melted through several layers of ice, and the alcohol in the solution prevented the water from refreezing.

Plenty of remedies to try... after all, it could be a long, icy winter.
