The Minneapolis City Council took its first steps to make it more expensive to run for public office.

The fees, proposed by the Charter Commission, would be $500 for mayor, $250 for city council members and $100 for both parks and recreation commissioners and the Board of Estimates and Taxation.

They've been $20 across the board since the 1960's. Changing them would require a change in the city charter.

It must get approval from the full city council and the mayor to take effect.
