A Columbia Heights man has been charged with theft after he was caught on surveillance video stealing metal pieces from his work.

Thirty-four-year-old Matthew James Sander Hansen, also known as Matthew James Bellanger, works at RAO Manufacturing in Fridley. On Monday, Nov. 11, an employee processing payroll noticed that Hansen punched out of work late the previous night.

A review of surveillance video from the previous 30 days showed that Hansen had been loading metal products and raw materials into a vehicle from Oct. 10 to Nov. 12, according to the criminal complaint. He had allegedly been using the company’s forklift to load his vehicle with the metal.

The total amount taken was $10,000.

In a statement to police, Hansen admitted to taking stainless steel “blanks” from the company and scrapping them at Metro Metals in St. Paul.

Hansen has been charged with theft. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison and up to $20,000 in fines.
