The Mayo Clinic unveiled new plans for a large expansion that will begin next year on Monday.

They plan to add on five floors to the Mary Brigh East Building and also renovate the third floor at Saint Mary’s Hospital.

The expansion will provide patients with private rooms and increase space in the rooms to help patients and staff move around the bed. Crews will also install ceiling lifts and private bathrooms and showers for patients.

Each room will also provide space for family members to spend the night and  is expected to cost about $75 million.

The Mayo Clinic is also diving into the world of sports medicine.

The clinic started building a 22,000-square-foot sports medicine center this past summer.

Mayo said this will help meet a growing demand for specialized treatments and training for athletes.

The center will include a state-of-the-art hockey training center with a skating treadmill and equipment for stick handling and shooting.

The center will open in Rochester next April.

It was originally reported that the money for the project is coming from $585 million approved by the state legislature back in May, but a Mayo Clinic spokesperson has since said that the expansion project is funded entirely by Mayo Clinic and that no state dollars are going for the private investment.
