Friday, Nov. 22, 2013, marks 10 years since Alfonso Rodriguez kidnapped and murdered 22-year-old Dru Sjodin.

The story made national headlines as volunteers searched for the University of North Dakota student, who disappeared while talking on the phone with her boyfriend.

She has been walking to her car at the mall in Grand Forks, when her boyfriend, who was on the phone with her, heard her say "no, no, no". Then the line fell silent.

Days after her disappearance, convicted sex offender Alfonso Rodriguez of Crookston, was charged with abducting Sjodin.

Months later, her body was found close to where he lived. A federal grand jury charged Rodriguez with her murder.

He was eventually convicted and became the first person put on death row in North Dakota.

Sjodin's family remembers the girl they say had so much to offer the world. "Her spunk, I always loved her spirit. I miss her hands, as a mother, you hold your daughter's hands."

Rodriguez remains on death row in a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Just last week, KSTP learned that Rodriguez confessed to the crime for the first time since the murder.

The revelation came out of a document filed by prosecutors, saying Rodriguez is mentally competent. He claimed his lawyers made a mistake by not seeking an insanity defense and wants his conviction appealed.

A hearing is scheduled for next month in Fargo.
