The University of Minnesota has entered a new partnership with the intent to save lives with the use of umbilical cord blood.

They've teamed up with the St. Louis Cord Blood Bank in Missouri to store the cord blood.

Researchers say cord blood has the ability to kill cancer cells and rebuild immune systems damaged by chemotherapy and radiation.

Cord blood is collected voluntarily after childbirth and will be stored in St. Louis.

Then it gets matched to patients in need of it nationwide.

There are no facilities that store the cord blood in Minnesota.

The deal is expected to be finalized Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013.
