Minnesota's effort to honor military veterans is playing out in ceremonies and remembrances across the state. Events are planned Monday at veterans' homes, museums, high schools and other places:
Plant a Flag for Freedom 2013 Veterans Day Event: Veterans' names will be placed on an Honor Board and a flag will be planted for each person. The event takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday at Highway 101 and Wayzata Boulevard in Wayzata. For information click here.
Minneapolis Veterans Home: The Minnesota Veterans Home invites everyone to the Veterans Day Program where guest speaker Maj. General Edward Steiner (Ret.) of the US Army will give a speech. Music and refreshments will be provided. It will take place in the auditorium of 5101 Minnehaha Ave. S. in building 15 at 2 p.m. Monday. For information, click here.
Apple Valley High School: Apple Valley High School will have its Fourth Annual Veterans Day Recognition Assembly to honor local veterans for their services. During the assembly, a social hour, coffee, and breakfast pastries will be served. The event will be held at the Apple Valley High School starting at 8:15 a.m. For information, click here.
Honoring our Heroes: The special keynote speaker for this event will be Staff Sergeant Sal Giunta, the first living Medal of Honor recipient since the Vietnam War. The event will be at the General Mills Head Quarters, 1 General Mills Blvd., Minneapolis, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. For information, click here.
Maple Lake Veterans Day Program: Veterans Day programs will be held in the high school auditorium at 9 a.m. Monday and at the elementary school at 10 a.m. The V Restaurant in Maple Lake will provide free lunch for all veterans. Free Meal & Museum Tour: Veterans will be provided with a free meal of stew, bread, dessert, and beverages. The Perham VFW will give museum tours of the "In Their Own Words" Veteran Museum. Giveaways, speakers, and other activities will be held on Monday at 805 West Main Perham, MN 56573. For information click here.
Winona Area Veterans Day: World War II re-enactors will perform for the public. The Veterans Day program for Winona will begin at 11 a.m. Monday. In addition, the 24 hour vigil will take place at Veterans Memorial Park. For information click here.
Veteran Discounts: On Monday, Nov. 11, there will be several discounts and freebies for current and retired military. Some freebies include food, Nickelodeon Universe passes, haircuts, and more. For information click here.
CBPA: Champlin-Brooklyn Park Academy will assemble an honor wall with the names of veterans that they would like to honor. Students and staff can invite veterans and service members to dine with them during lunch periods Monday, Nov. 11. First period lunch begins at 11:25 a.m. at the school at 6100 109th Ave., Champlin.
Andover Elementary School: The school will be having a color guard and a flag-raising ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Monday. The Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of "My Country 'Tis of Thee" will be performed by staff and students. Andover Elementary School is located at 14950 Hanson Blvd. NW, Andover.
Minnesota Zoo: The Minnesota Zoo is saluting veterans and all military personnel with free zoo admission and free parking this Veterans Day. The special deal is for active, retired and civilian personnel with proof of military service. Family members of military personnel will receive half-price admission.
