The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources is warning hunters they have a good chance of falling out of their tree stands.
The agency says one out of every three hunters who use tree stands falls at some point during their hunting career. Most of the falls take place while hunters are ascending or descending the tree.
A recent International Hunter Education Association study found 300 to 500 hunters die annually in tree stand accidents and another 6,000 suffer injuries.
DNR hunter education officials say hunters should always wear a full body harness in the stand and while climbing the tree, always maintain three points of contact while climbing in or out of a stand, always use a haul line to raise unloaded firearms or bows.
