Toilets can be big water-wasters in your home, but upgrading to a newer model with a low-flow or duel-flush feature can save money.

Carrie Tamminga said replacing her toilet with one that helped conserve water was a priority while she was remodeling her bathroom.

“It was really important for me to get the duel flush because of less water, and I knew it would save on bills.”

Angie Hicks, Founder of Angie's List said homeowners have a lot of good options to choose from.

“Toilets have become very sophisticated over the years,” Hicks said. “You can find a very basic toilet for a few hundred dollars all the way up to thousands of dollars for the state-of-the-art toilet.”

Hicks said homeowners can choose between a one or two-piece, a round or elongated bowl, differing heights, and features like automatic lids and deodorizers, but there is one feature it must have.

The Energy Policy Act of 1992 requires all new toilets to be low-flow or low-flush.

Although an experienced do-it-yourselfer may be able to install a new toilet, Hicks recommends hiring a licensed plumber because a poor installation job can cause leaks under the flooring.
