Derrick Williams' Defining Third NBA Season

Created: 10/30/2013 9:20 AM KSTP.com

When the Timberwolves took forward Derrick Williams No. 2 in the 2011 Draft, he was the obvious selection, the clear-cut second-best pro prospect. But his first two professional years have been interesting to say the least.

Williams is still trying to find an ideal position -- he a better fit at the small forward or big forward spot? If it's the latter, that's tough because of All-Star Kevin Love's presence. There's only so many minutes to be had even when Love slides over to center against certain teams.

Williams dropped almost 20 pounds in the offseason working with noted trainer for the stars, Gunnar Peterson. The idea is to earn a majority of his minutes at the small forward spot, especially with Chase Budinger (knee) out until late December or January, per team owner Glen Taylor.

If Williams can't flourish at the three, look for the Wolves to shop him. One team source notes that there's interest in Philadelphia's Evan Turner. Maybe there's a match eventually. But in the meantime, Williams, admittedly, wants to be in Minnesota long-term. He's hoping it doesn't come to that.
