Most adults depend on their smartphones or tablets, but how much are children using mobile devices? New research shows many more, younger children are mastering the technology.

The new study, released by Common Sense Media, shows 38 percent of children under 2-years-old have used a mobile device. Since 2011, the number of kids age 8 and younger who have used mobile devices has nearly doubled.

"It can be good and it can be bad, it depends on the content and what you are doing with it," said Dr. Jennifer Keis, a pediatrician at Allina Medical Clinic in Coon Rapids.

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) updated its recommendations to parents Monday, listing "media rules" for the home.

"We want families to still spend time together so meal time should probably be device free, media free, and bed time. You don't sleep well if you are constantly distracted," Keis said.

The AAP also recommends keeping entertainment screen time to less than an hour or two a day. They discourage it all together for children under the age of 2.
