When three talented women from St. Cloud cast around for a project that would use their creative abilities and provide a social interaction, they thought of books, but not necessarily for reading.

Jean Bjorke and Val Broste, both 58 years old, and their friend, Kathie Laakso, 69, noticed that thousands of old books end up in the landfill. So, they began to rescue these unwanted tomes from the libraries and secondhand stores and turn them into unique objects.

They taught themselves to use tools like drills, screwdrivers and razor knives to turns old books into decorative coat hooks, lamps, and even cut-out letters.

Working out of Kathie Laakso's kitchen and garage the ladies, who call themselves "Book Women 3", turn out dozens of different products that sell quickly at a couple of local gift stores.

And when the trio isn’t making arts and crafts out of books, they are reading them.
