More than 500 students from a North Minneapolis school will stay warm this winter with a new coat from a "Firefighters Coats for Kids" event.

On Wednesday, Minneapolis firefighters partnered with Operation Warm to hand out the new winter jackets to kids at Lucy Craft Laney Elementary School.

The firefighters spent time personally fitting each child with a new coat, and helped them write their name on the tag which reads "Made Especially for You." The coats were made by the nationwide program.

According to the Firefighters Coats for Kids Foundation, more than 98 percent of the student population at Lucy Craft Laney Elementary School qualify for free or reduced lunch, which means their standard of living is at the federal poverty line.

In its first year, Firefighters Coats for Kids Foundation provided 30,000 kids with coats made in America. It also supported more than 200 jobs. “This is so much more than a coat,” added Justin Johnson, Minneapolis Professional Firefighters. “Beyond warmth and dignity for children, American coat production targets a root cause of poverty for so many families.”
