Wildlife managers say a young female moose that frequented Crookston earlier this year has died.

Officials repeatedly tried to chase the moose out of town, but it kept returning. Department of Natural Resources staffers finally tranquilized the moose in late June, fitted her with a satellite collar and released her in the Caribou Wildlife Management Area in far northwestern Minnesota.

Ross Hier, area DNR wildlife supervisor in Crookston, tells the Grand Forks Herald the moose had been very active for much of August, but became much less active in mid-September.  Another DNR official found her alive and appearing healthy yet reluctant to move. Days later, the collar indicated no movement. Researchers found her dead.

The cause has not been determined. Tests are being run at the University of Minnesota.
