Online retail giant Amazon.com plans to begin collecting sales taxes from Wisconsin residents this fall.

Department of Revenue spokeswoman Laurel Patrick says Amazon has told the state it will obtain a permit by Nov. 1 and then begin collecting sales taxes when it sells merchandise to Wisconsin residents.

Patrick tells the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel the plan to begin collecting sales taxes is tied to Amazon's proposed distribution center in Kenosha.

Seattle-based Amazon currently doesn't have a physical presence in Wisconsin, so it's not required to collect sales taxes from Wisconsin residents. Patrick says the distribution center changes that.

Kenosha officials say the goal is to open the facility in the fall of 2014. Mayor Keith Bosman says the facility will likely have more than 1,100 full-time employees.
