The federal government shutdown could have an effect on the flu season too.

The Centers for Disease Control - the federal agency that tracks the number of flu cases and the kinds of strains that are circulating - is largely off duty because of the shutdown, according to the Mayo Clinic.

The information discovered by the CDC helps prevent and manage flu outbreaks.

In Minnesota, state health officials continue to track that information.

Health officials say the big challenge isn't knowing how many cases are in each state, it's connecting those cases to certain strains of the virus. That process is managed by the CDC.
