Mercedes-Benz said by the year 2020 some of the cars on the road could have "no one" driving.
An experimental vehicle expected to pave the way took a 60-mile driverless drive.
The car can stop and accelerate all while keeping a safe distance from the vehicle in front of it. It can also merge and recognize hazards like people crossing the street or cars backing up.
The cars don't come cheap though. Right now, a European S-Class with a semi hands-free feature costs about $100,000.
