STATEMENT: Minn. Orchestra Board Statement on Vote

The Minnesota Orchestra musicians' union Saturday rejected the Minnesota Orchestra's latest contract proposal. The Orchestra Board released the following statement regarding this action:

"The Board is very disappointed the musicians have rejected a fourth contract offer which was made possible by generous contributions from so many community partners. We have moved our position significantly over the last 18 months, beginning with a request for a 32% salary cut and landing most recently with a proposal that offered an average annual reduction of 17.7 % over the life of the contract. Our fourth proposal, which did not entirely resolve the organization’s $6 million annual deficit, included an average annual salary of $104,500, a $20,000 bonus per musician, which was made possible by community partners, and a minimum of ten weeks paid vacation. This was a true compromise, and we are disappointed that the musicians have not yet indicated a similar willingness to compromise or to offer a serious proposal of their own.”
