I just finished watching a review copy of Shout Factory/Scream Factory’s John Carpenter’s “Prince of Darkness” Collector’s Edition Blu-ray, and I thought it was great.

“Prince of Darkness” was released in 1987 and was directed by John Carpenter (“Halloween”, “The Fog”).

It stars Donald Pleasence, Jameson Parker, Lisa Blount, Victor Wong, Dennis Dun and Alice Cooper.

I really thought the actors did a great job in “Prince of Darkness.”  I am a huge fan of Donald Pleasence, and in my opinion, he has not done a bad movie. I really enjoyed his acting in the “Halloween” series, and to see him in another one of John Carpenter’s movies was great.

“Prince of Darkness” is about a group of graduate students and scientists who are asked by a priest (Donald Pleaseance) to help examine a strange canister that is discovered in an abandoned church. The ancient canister contains a mysterious liquid and when it is opened, a demonic spirit is released. Now, the scientists must try and stop the evil force.

I really thought the story was interesting and original. I also thought that it was suspenseful and very terrifying. I think that some of the scarier films that have been made are ones that are about demons and ghosts, because anything can happen, and they are very unpredictable.

The quality of the film looked and sounded great.

The special effects looked great, and I think Robert Grasmere and the special effects team did a wonderful job. The film was pretty gory in spots, and the zombie transformations looked really cool.

The bonus features in “Prince of Darkness” are once again amazing and very entertaining to watch.  The bonus features include:
 - Audio commentary with director John Carpenter
 - “Sympathy For the Devil” – an all new interview with writer/director John Carpenter
- “ Alice at the Apocalypse” – an all new interview with actor & rock legend Alice Cooper
- “The Messenger” – an all new interview with actor & special visual effects supervisor Robert Grasmere
 - “Hell on Earth” – a look at the film’s score with co-composer Alan Howarth
 - Horror’s Hallowed Grounds with host Sean Clark
  - Alternate opening from TV version
 - Original theatrical trailer

My favorite special feature on any DVD or Blu-ray is the audio commentary. I find it really fascinating to watch the film and hear what the director, actors, writers, and other people involved with the film have to say about the movie.

I just love hearing about making the movie and all of the stories about it. It was great listening to John Carpenter’s commentary. It was very interesting, and I learned a lot about the making of “Prince of Darkness.”

Overall I really enjoyed Shout Factory/Scream Factory’s “Prince of Darkness” a lot. The story was scary and suspenseful. The actors were great, and the special effects looked amazing.  The bonus features were very entertaining to watch especially the audio commentary with John Carpenter.
