Hazelden Expansion Adds Focus on Young Women

Hazelden's new $30 million expansion includes a new unit for young women dealing with addiction.

Construction is still underway on the project at the Plymouth campus, slated to be finished by early 2014. It will add 150 new beds, and a new unit dedicated to young women.

Hazelden Youth Continuum Medical Director Dr. Joseph Lee explains, "It used to be thought that addiction was a thing for young males and older males. And we're finding out that young college-bound and college-educated women are getting addicted at increasing rates."

The new facility also includes an art room, a music room, a fitness center, and a space to worship. "Recovery is all about healthy living.. the music they play, the sports they are involved in, eating good food, getting in shape, making good friends... it's about finding an alternative to your using lifestyle that's so much better for you," said Lee.

Among the special features of the new facility: counseling and psychological services for women with addiction, who are oftentimes victims of sexual abuse.

The expansion is slated to be finished by early 2014.
