Sixteen-year-old Luke Nelson is alert, moving around and cracking jokes after he suffered a brain injury during Friday night's football game.
His team, Dassel-Cokato, practiced for the first time Monday since the accident. Coach Ryan Weinandt says he's trying to give Nelson's team members information and support. "You want to reassure them that if you don't feel comfortable playing or you need to talk, we are here," he said.
Many of Nelson's teammates spent part of the weekend visiting Nelson at Hennepin County Medical Center. They say seeing their friend was reassuring.
"He was cracking jokes; he's a funny kid," cousin and teammate Nate Nelson said.
The team plans on wearing Luke's number, 43, during the Friday night game against Fairmont.
