Minnesota fans can experience outdoor hockey for the first time in eight decades when the Univeristy of Minnesota hosts the 2014 Hockey City Classic Jan. 17 at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
Chicago-based sports and entertainment marketing agency, Intersport, and the university are partnering to put on the event which features a Minnesota hockey doubleheader.
The Gopher women will face Minnesota State at 4:30 p.m. and the men will take on Ohio State at 8 p.m.
University of Minnesota Athletic Director Norwood Teague said in a statement that Minnesota’s hockey tradition will make the event especially exciting.
The Hockey City Classic at TCF Bank Stadium will be a special event for the entire state of Minnesota,” Teague said. “Outdoor hockey is a prominent fixture of Minnesota culture, and we know that partnering with Intersport for this event will guarantee an unbelievable experience for everyone involved.”
The classic will be part of a larger Winter Festival that will feature youth, high school, and adult hockey events, ice rentals, and a public skate.
Last year, Soldier Field in Chicago hosted 52,000 fans for the inaugural Hockey City Classic that saw Notre Dame vs. Miami University and Minnesota vs. Wisconsin. The Winter Festival attracted 100,000 people for 80 events over the course of the 18-day event.
