Hennepin County Demos New Remotely Operated Vehicle

Hennepin County has a new tool to help search dark and murky waters during a rescue or recovery operation. It's called a remotely operated vehicle, or R.O.V.

The R.O.V. is attached to a tether, which is attached to a computer and monitor. It's controlled with a joystick, just like you're playing a video game, and once the operator finds what he's looking for, a scuba diver goes in after it.

"When you're missing a loved one," said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek, "this is the type of equipment that you want to use and deploy."

The R.O.V. cost more than $150,000. The sheriff's office says about $113,000 came from a federal grant. Most of the remaining $20,000 came from private donations.
