First baseman Justin Morneau has been placed on trade waivers by the Minnesota Twins, national baseball analyst Peter Gammons reported Tuesday via his Twitter account.

According to 1500 ESPN, the process can be complicated, but it basically boils down to a three-day period in which Morneau can be claimed by opposing clubs.

The claiming team would then have a window of time to work out a trade with the Twins, or the Twins could pull Morneau back. The Twins could also choose to just give Morneau - and his prorated $14 million salary - to the claiming team for no further compensation.

A second trip through waivers, however, would be irrevocable, and the claiming team would automatically get Morneau and his salary for the rest of the season.

If Morneau goes unclaimed, he's eligible to be dealt to any big league team for any non-40-man roster player(s), or any other player who has cleared waivers or has been claimed by the Twins. Click here to read more about the trade waiver.
