Following a weekend of heavy rain, lawn crews around the metro have shifted into overdrive to keep ahead of a grass growth spurt.

Shawn Rice works in the Saint Louis Park Public Works department. Rice says the rain and sunshine add up to more mowing, "It's amazing with the heat and the water, the grass just pops. It'll take off in a couple of days you have to mow it again."

Saint Louis Park crews are currently working 10 hour days.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation says there are 34 crews cutting grass in the right of ways and ditches.

MnDot's Spokesman Kent Barnard says long grass can be a safety issue, "If we allow the grass and weeds to grow up at intersections and interchanges, vehicles will have a harder time determining if there's another vehicle when they're trying to merge into traffic or try to make turns."
