U of M Poised to Ban Smoking Across Campus

The University of Minnesota is ready to impose a smoking ban at its Twin Cities campus.

U of M officials confirm the University Senate has voted in favor of the ban. The Senate includes faculty, students and staff. University President Eric Kaler says a tobacco-free campus has become an expectation, rather than an innovation.

Kaler would impose the ban, which could begin in 2014 after an educational campaign.

A survey by the university's Boynton Health Service found 67 percent of faculty and staff and 64 percent of students support a campus-wide ban on tobacco.

University officials say a task force will be formed to talk about implementing the plan, which could take 12-18 months.
