Opening Weekend at the Lyndale Farmers Market

Val Engelmeier may not be an actual farmer but there's no where he'd rather be than at the Minneapolis Farmers Market.

Vendor displays went up with the sun at the first day of the Minneapolis Farmers Market on Saturday.

"I woke up at 4:30 a.m.," said Englemeier. "I was so excited that I couldn't get back to sleep!"

Val and his son-in-law, Anton, have sold home-made hand-crafted garden statues here for the past ten years.

"He's a world war two veteran, he's 88 years old and he's still out here smiling and I hope to do the same thing when I'm his age," said Englemeier's son-in-law, Anton Pierson.

"I feel just like the weather - wonderful!  I've been waiting for this for six months!" said Englemeier.

Greg Sullwold and his father, Wayne, woke up at three to get his mother's famous almonds roasting in time for the hundreds of shoppers flooding the market on the first warm weekend of spring.

"I've been doing it too long now to miss opening day of the farmers market," said Sullwold.

We waited for this for months, and finally, spring has arrived.

"I just hope I live another 88 years to keep doing this!" said Englemeier.
