Shout Factory has just released “H.P. Lovecraft’s From Beyond” on Blu-ray for the first time and it is absolutely a must have for horror fans.
Not only is it a unique and entertaining horror film, it is loaded with tons of extras that will have you entertained for hours.
“From Beyond” was released in 1986 and stars Jeffery Combs, Barbara Crampton, Ken Foree, Ted Sorel, and Carolyn Purdy-Gordon. It was directed by Stuart Gordon and the special effects were done by John Buechler and Mark Shostrom.
“From Beyond” is based on the short story by H.P. Lovecraft. It’s about a scientist who creates a device called “The Resonator” and it is supposed to stimulate a gland in the human brain. When the scientist’s assistant Dr. Crawford (Jeffery Combs) turns on the machine, a bunch of monsters appear and one of them bites him. He tries to turn off the machine but the other scientist won’t let him.
Dr. Crawford gets scared and runs out of the house. The neighbors hear all of the commotion and they call the cops. When the cops arrive they find Dr. Crawford outside of the house and the scientist dead inside. It looks like Crawford killed the scientist so they lock him up in a mental institute.
While Crawford is in the institute, his doctor becomes interested in “The Resonator” and discovers that the gland in his head has grown, so she wants to investigate it. She lets Crawford go back to the house so she can see “The Resonator” and to see if it really works. Once they turn “The Resonator” on, monsters appear and the chaos begins.
I really liked the story a lot and thought that it was really good. I had never read the short story, so it was new to me and I liked it.
The special effects are what made the movie in my opinion. The gore and creatures looked great and very believable.
The quality of the movie looked amazing and was crystal clear. I would have to say that this is the sharpest looking film of the Scream Factory series yet. The Blu-ray looked phenomenal and even the DVD looked astonishing.
I mentioned earlier that the “From Beyond Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack” was full of special features. It is insane what is included with this collection. The special features include:
- Audio Commentary with writer Denis Paoli
- Multiple Dimensions: A look at the film’s extensive Make-up & creature effects with special effects creators John Buechler, Anthony Doublin, John Naulin, and Mark Shostrom.
- Paging Dr. McMichaels: An interview with Actress Barbara Crampton

I was entertained for hours with all of the special features and I know people who buy “From Beyond” will feel the same way.
