Dairy Industry Seeks Change to Milk Product Labeling

Many people are urging the FDA to turn down a request by the dairy industry to change the way it labels some of its milk products.

Right now, many school cafeterias don't allow products like strawberry milk or chocolate milk because of the higher sugar and calorie count. So, people in the dairy industry want to swap the sugar for non-nutritive sweeteners.

But as rules stand now, they would have to label it something other than milk.

The dairy industry wants the FDA to change that rule. But more than 96,000 petitioners say no way.

An online petition urges the FDA to throw out the request by the International Dairy Foods Association and the National Milk Producers Federation.
