Gophers Fans Celebrate Upset Over Indiana
The Gophers hadn't beaten a #1 team in 24 years. The last time fans stormed the court at Williams Arena was 11 years ago. The darkness of both a rocky season and an era of more downs than ups finally saw some light as the Gophers upset #1 Indiana.
As the final horn sounded, fans surged onto the raised floor at the barn for the first time since the Gophers beat a 25th-ranked Indiana team on February 2nd, 2002.
The wait to defeat a #1-ranked team had run much longer. In 1989, the top-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini came to town and lost - the last time the nation's poll leader had come up against the Gophers and lost.
