SLIDESHOW: Winter Carnival Sculpture Competition

The snow sculpture carving event, held at the Minnesota State Fairgrounds on Saturday, is hosted by the Vulcans. Sculptures will be on display through the end of the Winter Carnival, February 3.

The Individual Competition for ice sculptures began in Rice Park at 9 a.m. today. Sculptures had until 2 p.m., for professionals, and 3 p.m., for artisans, to finish.

Each team was given two blocks of ice approximately sized 40” x 20” x 10” and weighing 300 lbs each.

These are the winners of the snow sculpture competition:

First Place and Artists Choice

“The Big Game”

Team name:  Snow Cowboys

Artists:  Mike Majerus of Rogers, David Ryding of Minneapolis, and Adam Turner of Arden Hills

Artwork description:  Full size bull moose in battle with two wolves

Prize:  $1,000 and the chance to represent Minnesota at the National Snow Sculpting Competition at Lake Geneva, Wisc.

Second Place and People’s Choice

“Beethoven’s Fifth Lesson”

Team name: Sculptors in Sync
