The gunman opened fired on the men and when it was all over officer King was shot in the arm and his partner saved his life. The gunman was dead.

Thursday police chief Tom Smith expressed his thanks.

"They make me extremely proud. I hope they make all the citizens of St. Paul proud, because they're willing to go into harm's way and do the things most people don't understand," said chief Smith.

Officer King is still recovering from his injuries and is not back on the job. Officer Wanschura wasn't hurt and is back at work.
