Councilmember Don Samuels Announces Exploratory Mayoral Bid

A Minneapolis City Councilmember is considering running for mayor following R.T. Rybak’s announcement that he will not seek a fourth term.

Don Samuels, who represents the Fifth Ward, announced that he will explore a 2013 bid as the next mayor of Minneapolis. He is the chair of the Public Safety, Civil Rights, and Health Committee.

Over the next few weeks, Samuels says he will spend time with friends and family to determine how he can serve Minneapolis. He will announce his official intentions after the New Year.

Samuels was first elected to the city council in 2003. He is the founder of the PEACE Foundation – Public Engagement and Community Empowerment. He is also the founder of the African American Economic Development Committee, which supports the development of African American businesses in the city, and the Institute for Authentic Dialogue on Race, which guides leaders in conversations and relationships.
