Gaming Industry Hiring More Psychologists

Blame psychology for your video game addiction.

If you’ve ever played Angry Birds, Words with Friends, or FarmVille, you know how easy it is to get hooked.

Diann Edwards plays FarmVille on her laptop up to eight hours a day and says she spends at least $200 a month. Dr. Timothy Fong of UCLA says he sees patients like Edwards every day from all different occupations and backgrounds, and it turns out that games are made that way on purpose.

The gaming industry is hiring more trained psychologists as consultants. They use intermittent rewards like gambling as well as the six-second rule, which means there’s a visual sparkle every six seconds to keep you playing.
