Austin Meatpacker Settles OSHA Citations

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and an Austin meatpacker have reached a settlement after the company contested three OSHA safety violations.

OSHA cited Quality Pork Processors after a routine inspection last April. OSHA alleged the violations put cleaning crews at risk of being exposed to hazardous materials. It also alleged workers weren't properly disabling machines between uses, or before maintenance.

OSHA proposed nearly $12,000 in fines. Minnesota OSHA spokesman James Honerman tells KTTC-TV the agency often reduces penalties if the company agrees to fix the problem or improve employee training. OSHA's report shows the penalty was reduced by nearly half.
