Unpaved Mpls. Roads Punish Vehicles

Minneapolis still has roads made of brick, oil, and wood.

The city paved the majority of residential streets between the 1960s and 1990s. However, the city says approximately three miles are still unpaved.

The city says the majority of these are in industrial areas home to just a few businesses. One reason these streets have remained unpaved, the city says, is because those businesses would likely face a large assessment if the streets were to be paved.

The city prioritizes its street paving plan based on traffic and need. There's no timetable regarding the unpaved streets. But the city says it will eventually pave all of its streets.
