COLUMN: Aaron's Backstage Pass: Wizard of Oz Review
I just played a pretty fun and addicting game on Facebook. “The Wizard of Oz” was just released on Facebook by Spooky Cool Labs.
From what I played of it, I thought it was really fun and I can see how people will get really hooked on it.
The game is based on the “Wizard of Oz” and has actual video and pictures from the movie. I thought the graphics looked amazing and the images and videos from the movie looked great. One cool thing is that the voices are the actual voices from the movie and the Dorothy looks just like Judy Garland.
The game starts out right away with Dorothy arriving in Munchkinland and you see that her house landed on the Wicked Witch of the East.
You meet Glinda the good witch and she explains everything to you. Your mission is to rebuild Munchkinland and to rebuild the Yellow Brick Road so you can make it to the Emerald City.
As you play and explore the Land of Oz, you will meet a lot of the different characters from the movie, like the Scarecrow, Tin Man, and Cowardly Lion.
You will also have to fight off attacks from the terrifying flying monkeys and the Wicked Witch of the West as well.
You can use emeralds or coins to buy buildings and businesses like lumber yards. Then you can hire Munchkins to work at the different places. So for instance when you build the lumber yard, you can have Munchkins go out into the woods and chop down tress.
This is a little mini game that requires you to push a button at the right time to cut the tree down.
Once you cut a tree down, you get wood to build more things and experience points. The more you play the game, the more things you unlock.
The one thing that I do have to warn you about is that you can actually spend real money to buy extra coins and emeralds to be used in the game. You do this by using a credit card and going to a special menu. I can see where this would cost people a lot of money, because you are only limited to so many coins/emeralds and things you can do in one day.
After you use all of your coins and emeralds for the day, you have to wait until the next day to get more or you can buy more if you use your credit card.
I thought the controls were really easy to learn and the tutorial is very detailed and well done. I picked up everything right away and I know other people will also.
One thing that I really liked was that you can click on an icon of Dorothy on the left side of the screen and it will tell you what you need to do.
At first I was so over whelmed because there was so much to do and I didn’t know what I really needed to do. Once you click on the icon there is a list of objectives and I think that makes the game less stressful.
Another really cool thing about the Wizard of Oz is that over the weekend Dorothy’s dress that was used in the movie “The Wizard of Oz” was auctioned off. So from November 12th until November 27th you can get a free dress for Dorothy in the game.
I really thought that Spooky Lab’s “Wizard of Oz” on Facebook was pretty fun. It was easy to learn how to play and there the graphics and music were great. I thought the film clips were a great addition to the game. I know fans of “The Wizard of Oz” will really like this game a lot and even people who want something new to try will also like this as well.
