Despite an 11.7 percent unemployment rate for post 9/11 veterans in Minnesota, one local veteran decided to make his post-war recovery a success by opening his own business.
KSTP’s Megan Newquist talked to Gabe Braaten-Lee, Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, about his post-war success story.
Through college, Braaten-Lee said he worked in the cell phone industry. After he got back from serving in Kuwait in 2008, he thought it made sense to continue what he started.
Braaten-Lee and a business partner, Ken David, opened their own wireless phone franchise in November 2010.
The way he was able to open the company was through the “Patriot Express Loan,” which is available to veterans.
Braaten-Lee said that because of his veteran status he was able to secure a loan with a small amount put down.
There were 21 million veterans in America in 2011. Today, the national average is 12.1 percent.
