For All the Worries, Long Lines Biggest Poll Issue

Fears of wholesale disenfranchisement of voters on Election Day turned out to be unwarranted. The most prevalent problems were exceedingly long lines at dozens of precincts.
    
Hundreds of voters stood in line to cast ballots for more than four hours past the 7 p.m. closing time in Miami-Dade County, Fla., even after President Barack Obama was projected Tuesday night as winning re-election over Republican Mitt Romney. Long waits were also common in Virginia, South Carolina, Tennessee and elsewhere. Candidates and celebrities used social media to ask Obama supporters to remain patient and stay in line to vote.
    
Other problems with voter access, machine failures and some legal skirmishes, especially in Pennsylvania, were scattered. There were few tense confrontations among poll monitors, and no major instances of election fraud.
