Walmart Makes Forceful Push on Target's Minn. Turf

Target Corp. may be headquartered in Minneapolis, but that's not stopping Wal-Mart Stores Inc. from making an aggressive push in its rival's home state.

Three Walmart SuperCenters are slated to open this week in Burnsville, St. Cloud and Redwood Falls. When that happens, Minnesota will have more Walmart outlets, including Sam's Clubs, than it does Target stores.

And a St. Paul Pioneer Press report says Walmart isn't done. The Bentonville, Ark.,-based company has begun preliminary work on three more Walmart SuperCenters.

Retail analyst Stan Pohmer says Walmart is following its standard strategy of dominating a region by saturating the marketplace. He predicts that independent grocers will have to sell out or consolidate.

A Walmart spokeswoman says the new stores will provide jobs and expand access to fresh, affordable merchandise.
