Angie's List: Tips on Working With a Travel Agent

Now is the time to make your holiday travel plans, and many folks will book holiday vacations online. However, you might be missing out on savings or even be at risk for getting scammed.

In today's Angie's List report, we help you figure out when to use a travel agent.

Sherry Frey and her husband Charlie are world travelers. A trip to Alaska was on their bucket list.

"If a deal looks too good to be true, then it probably is," Frey said.

Unfortunately, they did not choose a stable travel company when they booked their vacation.

"She (tour agent) did not deal with a credit card, so you have no recourse," Frey said.

The company went bankrupt two months before their trip.

"It's important to get your research, to get a good one," Angie Hicks said.

While the Frey's had a bad experience, a reputable travel agency can make your trip a good one.

"If your trip is complicated and expensive, internationally, a travel agent could make the process a lot easier," Hicks said.

An agent can also help you save.

"We can find the lowest fare for you," Mike Moorhead said.

The Freys say they've learned their lesson, and in the future plan to book trips with companies that have solid reputations.

"Hopefully one of these days, Alaska will be realized," Frey said.
